This is a charming older (early 1970s) family house -- a very large cottage -- on the beachfront. The decks are cantilevered over the dunes, offering stunning unobstructed 220-degree views of miles of wide white beaches and endless blue ocean from the living room, dining room, kitchen, and beachfront bedrooms. The beach in front of the house is extremely wide, with clean fine white sand stretching away beyond rows of rolling dunes covered in native grasses and bushes. The views from the deck and the oceanfront living/dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms are truly breathtaking. Because the house sits higher up on the dunes and far in front of the other oceanfront houses, guest have an unparalleled feeling of privacy amid the panoramic open views of sky and beach and ocean.
The house is built in the popular ‘upside down’ style: On the top floor are the living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms and one hall bath. On the bottom floor are are three bedrooms and two baths (one hall, one en suite). The entrance to the garage is from the bottom floor hallway, through a door and down a short flight of steps.
The upstairs great room contains the living area, dining area, and open kitchen. In the living area, the vaulted ceiling rises to about 16 feet; two sets of sliding glass doors open onto the front deck, facing east out to the ocean; and tall windows on the south wall offer breathtaking views of miles of dunes, beach and ocean. A side area is equipped with the television and two armchairs, and the wifi router is here.
The dining room area seats eight on benches and chairs at the heavy table, and a breakfast bar with four stools separates the dining area from the kitchen. A sliding glass door in the dining area opens onto the upper deck on the south side of the house, for panoramic views of beach and ocean.
The kitchen has all the usual appliances – refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffeemaker -- and is well-stocked with bowls, pots, pans and cooking implements. There are stoneware dishes and stainless flatware for 10-12. The views from the kitchen to the beach, ocean, and sky are beautiful.
The upstairs front bedroom has sliding glass doors that open onto the upper deck, offering spectacular views (especially at night when the sky is full of stars). There is great privacy in the open views without a house in sight. The room has twin beds, a chest of drawers, a nightstand, a cedar chest, and double closets.
The upstairs side bedroom has beautiful unobstructed views of the beach and ocean from the east window; it contains twin beds, a chest of drawers, nightstand, and a closet.
The upstairs hall bath has a tub, shower, sink, long counter, and a washer and dryer. Both upstairs bedrooms use the hall bath.
The three downstairs bedrooms are all different: There is a large ‘dormitory’ bedroom, an en suite master bedroom, and a side bedroom.
The dormitory room has four twin beds, a chest of drawers, two bucket chairs, night tables, and a closet. It is perfect for children.
The master bedroom and the side bedroom each have sliding glass doors that open onto the lower deck, which is right on the dunes. The dunes give both rooms a great deal of privacy. The master bedroom has a bath (shower), a queen bed, a desk/set of drawers, nightstands and a closet. The side bedroom has twin beds, a chest of drawers, a nightstand and a closet.
The hall bath, which is used by the dormitory and the side bedroom, has a shower and a long counter.
The upper deck runs all the way around the house. The lower deck runs along the lower front of the house.
The garage has room for one car, but most families choose to park in the driveway (2 cars) and use the garage as a staging area for beach chairs, umbrellas, toys, and the propane and charcoal grills. In Avalon, outdoor grilling is not permitted on decks, and must be done on concrete driveways.
On clear nights, the beach glows in the starlight. Sitting on the deck and watching the moon and the stars is a magical experience. Looking 30 miles to the north, you can see a few oceanfront buildings in Atlantic City (because the shoreline runs east-northeast, not due north). If the night is very clear, you can also see the Ferris wheel in Wildwood to the south.
